A more complex view of motivation, identity, autonomy, and agency helps teachers understand—and effectively teach—students who don’t do homework, sleep in class, etc. This presentation describes current theoretical models, classroom research using surveys and journal entries by secondary students from Asia in Los Angeles, and practical teaching suggestions.
